Integrating Science, Social Studies and Mathematics - during the month of March, students were assigned to build a structure using at least two three-dimensional shapes as a culminating performance task for Math. Students' structures were then put together in class to build a tiny town and learn about local important places and people in a community. Students had a lot of fun talking about communities! Also students are using their tiny town structures to learn about the differences between objects, materials, and structure in science.
Nouns hunt and cooperative learning: according to Vygotsky, the founder of a theory of human cultural and social development, the higher cognitive conflict in children happens hrough a practical activity in a social environment. Grade 1 students where taught what a noun is through ample of practice in our morning message and daily reading. They were then set off in heterogeneous grouping to hunt for as much nouns as they can find to present to class. Student were engaged conversing what a noun is. The heterogeneous grouping provided students who were confused a chance to learn from their peers, and for those who were clear to find a way to communicate with their peers why or why not this word is not a noun. We had a lot of fun! Inquiry based and hands on learning - after researching an animal of their choice, students built a diorama of their animal habitat and presented to the class what they learned about their animal. Students had a lot of fun learning about the different animals, and learning about voice, tone, and expression as key presentation skills. |
